Harbor Horizons

You awaken in a realm of endless possibilities. Mist swirls around you, waiting to form into the world of your choosing.
Where would you like to go? Or perhaps, tell me what kind of universe you wish to explore?
2 | Arrival of the Miike Maru
I see a Japanese steamship approaching the harbor through morning mist. The Miike Maru, first vessel of its kind to reach these shores. Crowds gather at the docks, some curious, others wary.
Are you aboard the ship or waiting at the harbor? What year is this historic arrival?
3 | Waiting at Seattle harbor
Seattle, 1896. You stand among a bustling crowd at Schwabacher's Wharf. The air smells of salt and coal smoke. Businessmen in top hats mix with dock workers while newspaper photographers ready their equipment.
The Miike Maru emerges from Elliott Bay's fog. What brings you to this historic arrival?
4 | I am a merchant dreaming of creating sprawling trade empire
A perfect moment for an ambitious merchant! Seattle buzzes with Klondike gold rush whispers. The Miike Maru brings silk, tea, and porcelain—but also opportunity.
Nearby, James J. Hill of Great Northern Railway talks animatedly with investors. A Japanese businessman notices your interest.
What's your first move?
5 | Inspect the silks
You approach the unloading area as stevedores hoist crates from the ship. A customs officer eyes you suspiciously until you explain your merchant status.
The silks are magnificent—vibrant crimson and azure bolts with intricate patterns. Superior quality to European imports.
“Beautiful, yes?” says the Japanese businessman who followed you.
6 | Come up to him and introduce myself. My name is Michael. Michael McCliff
“McCliff-san, honored to meet you. I am Tanaka Hiroshi, though some call me Thomas.” He bows formally, then offers a Western handshake. “My family trades silk three generations. You have good eye for quality.” His English is accented but clear.
“First time in Seattle?”
7 | Isn’t it your first time in Seattle? I assume you arrived on NYK
Tanaka laughs pleasantly. “Indeed! My first American soil. I arrived on this very ship.” He gestures proudly at the Miike Maru. “First NYK vessel to reach Seattle. Historic day for both our nations.”
He adjusts his Western suit. “You know shipping companies well, McCliff-san?”
8 | Eager to learn more
Tanaka's eyes light up. “NYK—Nippon Yusen Kaisha—growing rapidly. Fourteen ships now! Direct route from Yokohama to Seattle cuts journey by days.”
He lowers his voice confidentially. “Tea, silk, porcelain eastbound. Timber, cotton, machinery westbound. The Pacific trade awakens.”
He studies you thoughtfully. “Perhaps we might discuss… arrangements?”

Tanaka nods decisively. “Not here. Too many ears.” He points toward Pioneer Square. “Seattle Hotel has private parlor. We can discuss terms over tea.”
The afternoon light casts long shadows as dock workers continue unloading precious cargo from the Miike Maru.
“Shall we, McCliff-san?”
